Cooperative shooter Deep Rock Galactic will soon let players take its old seasons of stuff out of the closet and take them for a spin. That means the first four rounds of themed extra stuff to do in Deep Rock will be available as their own game modes alongside a separate Vanilla module that can spit out events and game modes from every season—and all of that’s coming as part of DRG season 5 this June.

Meta’s announced a new fleet of AI chatbots at a Connect developer conference in California yesterday, ones with “some more personality”—and the selection of faces they’ve used sure is something.

In the presentation, Facebook founder and Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg talks about Meta’s development of AIs that are “a bit more fun”, gesturing to a screen with several generic faux-personalities such as Izzy, an “aspiring singer-songwriter.” I feel like there’s a Frankenstein-style science fiction story in which Izzy suddenly realises she’s artificial, her aspirations mere lines of code, but I’m thinking too hard about this.

Indie studio Red Square Games just announced SlavicPunk: Oldtimer, an isometric shooter/hacker/sneaker based on the fiction of Polish author Michał Gołkowski. You play a private detective with a whole lot of issues and an intimidating sitcom dad moustache who goes up against the usual assortment of gangs and corrupt corporate executives.

SlavicPunk: Oldtimer promises “solid combat and movement systems, as well as a modular weapon upgrade system”. Stealth is definitely an option, though maybe not non-lethal stealth given all the people who get shot or stabbed in the back during the trailer. As well as an assortment of guns and cybernetic upgrades, it’ll have “Battlehacking”, which the developers describe as “our own hi-tech spellcasting system”.

Between dangerous areas that players will need to sneak and/or shoot their way through will be moments of peace where you get to explore the city, finding sidequests and pushing along the plot, which involves stolen data…

Hello, yes, I really like these videos with lots of evil space bugs getting squashed by the giant space zealots. Every time I see one I watch it because Space Marine 2 is creeping up on us and  the giant swarms of monsters to chew through are really, really delightful tech to look at—as evinced by this supercut of swarming monster footage that popped up on the Warhammer Community website this week.

It’s a combination of footage that showed up in previous trailers with a few things I’m pretty sure are new, but this is impressive stuff not just for the technical aspect but because it realizes thirty-some years of Tyranid concept art and puts it in motion. The sprawling two-page spreads of art that used to adorn Warhammer 40,000 books would have these kinds of swarms on them—and the artists made those as dynamic as they could—but the flocking, swarming motion of the bugs in these trailer is the kind of stuff a good adaptation should b…

Microsoft’s long-simmering Perfect Dark reboot has been in the works for so long, with such a fraught development history, I’d basically written the whole thing off. But in a first look gameplay trailer at today’s Xbox Games Showcase, it looked bafflingly good, a cyberpunk FPS, if not a full-on immersive sim that could fill the Deus Ex-shaped hole in my heart.

The trailer starts with Joana Dark halo jumping into some kind of advanced arcology—later revealed to be Cairo in Egypt—with a force field protecting it from climate change-driven sandstorms raging outside. So far, it’s cool but just a cutscene—however we quickly dive into some exciting gameplay.

Call of Duty is joining the growing number of online games combatting toxicity by listening to in-game voice chat, and it’s using AI to assist the process. Activision announced a partnership with AI outfit Modulate to integrate its proprietary voice moderation tool—ToxMod—into Modern Warfare 2, Warzone 2, and the upcoming Modern Warfare 3.

Activision says ToxMod, which begins beta testing in North American servers today, is able to “identify in real-time and enforce against toxic speech—including hate speech, discriminatory language, harassment and more.”

Modulate describes ToxMod as “the only proactive voice chat moderation solution purpose-built for games.” While the official website lists a few games ToxMod is already being used in (mostly small VR games like Rec Room), Call of Duty’s hundreds of thousands of daily players will likely represent the largest deployment of the tool to date.

Larian Studios’ CEO Swen Vincke has revealed the developer had to do “a bit of crunch” to finish its beloved RPG Baldur’s Gate 3, but the amount was “certainly less” than the studio has done on previous projects.

As reported by GamesRadar, Vincke was queried about crunch during a Q&A session following a talk he gave at the Digital Dragons conference in Poland last week. “We didn’t overly crunch,” Vincke said in his response. “But we did have to do a bit of crunch, and I think, to be honest, you will always have a little bit when you’re trying to finish something, especially when there’s so much complexity that needs to be brought together.”

Although some overtime was required to get Baldur’s gate 3 out of the door, Vincke emphasised that the extent of crunch was “certainly less on BG3 than we did in the past”.
