Deep Rock Galactic is rolling out a feature to let you play old seasons-

Cooperative shooter Deep Rock Galactic will soon let players take its old seasons of stuff out of the closet and take them for a spin. That means the first four rounds of themed extra stuff to do in Deep Rock will be available as their own game modes alongside a separate Vanilla module that can spit out events and game modes from every season—and all of that’s coming as part of DRG season 5 this June.

As part of that, every single season’s tree of unlockables, their Performance Pass and Cosmetic Tree, will be put back in circulation as part of their own seasonal play mode. If you played that season before, you’ll get set back to where you were on that tree.

It’s an approach we’re seeing more and more limited-time-experience live service games adopt as time goes on: There’s a lot of game to play, so why restrict it to a limited amount of time when people might not be able to play it? With the notable exception of genre-leader Destiny 2, of course, which routinely re…

Epic Games boss defends Twitter, calls #BlocktheBlue supporters ‘losers and goons’-

Epic Games boss Tim Sweeney has weighed in on the discourse about blue checkmarks on Twitter, saying that people supporting the “Block the Blue” campaign are “losers and goons” who are trying to exclude people from “cool kid events.”

It’s fair to say that Twitter has been a goat rodeo since Elon Musk took control of the company in late 2022, but things took a turn for the even stupider last week. After months of waffling and fake-outs, Twitter finally eliminated legacy verification checks, meaning that the only people with the little checkmarks on their accounts were those who were paying $8 per month for a Twitter Blue subscription.

A few of the old check-holders remained: Xbox men Phil Spencer and Larry Hryb, for instance, kept their blue checks because they’re affiliated with the official Xbox account, which now has a gold check, signifying that it’s verified as “an official organization on Twitter.” For the most part, though, the “verified” blue checks were gon…

A Snoop Dogg AI named ‘The Dungeon Master’ joins Meta’s new fleet of bots, which you can ‘invoke’ in your group chats at-will-

Meta’s announced a new fleet of AI chatbots at a Connect developer conference in California yesterday, ones with “some more personality”—and the selection of faces they’ve used sure is something.

In the presentation, Facebook founder and Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg talks about Meta’s development of AIs that are “a bit more fun”, gesturing to a screen with several generic faux-personalities such as Izzy, an “aspiring singer-songwriter.” I feel like there’s a Frankenstein-style science fiction story in which Izzy suddenly realises she’s artificial, her aspirations mere lines of code, but I’m thinking too hard about this.

“This isn’t just gonna be about answering queries—this is about entertainment… we did something a little different for us, we partnered with a bunch of pretty awesome people to basically embody these and play them,” Zuckerberg explains, before summoning exercise coach “Victor” played by Dwayne Wade, a former pro basketball player.

Google ditches web domain business moments after unleashing .zip websites on unsuspecting grandmothers-

Google has form when it comes to giving up on almost anything that isn’t its core search business. So, add web domains to the list of failed Google experiments. Google Domains is officially toast. It will be wound down and its assets including the hosting of some 10 million domain name is being sold to none other than Squarespace.

Incidentally, if you’re interested in a full list of technologies and products Google has nixed, rock on over to the Google Graveyard at killedbygoogle.com. Anyway, the odd bit here is that it was just four weeks ago that Google Domains rolled eight new TLD or Top Level Domains, including .dad, .phd, .prof, .esq, .foo, .mov and .nexus to join old favourites like .com and .org.

Of all the new TLDs, it was .zip that caused the most controversy, enabling as it does some fairly obvious opportunities for bad actors to hoodwink the unwitting into clicking on nefarious links. It could be all too easy to make a link look like a legitimate .zip file dow…

Here’s a thoroughly Slavic cyberpunk stealth-action game-

Indie studio Red Square Games just announced SlavicPunk: Oldtimer, an isometric shooter/hacker/sneaker based on the fiction of Polish author Michał Gołkowski. You play a private detective with a whole lot of issues and an intimidating sitcom dad moustache who goes up against the usual assortment of gangs and corrupt corporate executives.

SlavicPunk: Oldtimer promises “solid combat and movement systems, as well as a modular weapon upgrade system”. Stealth is definitely an option, though maybe not non-lethal stealth given all the people who get shot or stabbed in the back during the trailer. As well as an assortment of guns and cybernetic upgrades, it’ll have “Battlehacking”, which the developers describe as “our own hi-tech spellcasting system”.

Between dangerous areas that players will need to sneak and/or shoot their way through will be moments of peace where you get to explore the city, finding sidequests and pushing along the plot, which involves stolen data…

I cannot get enough of the swarming tyranids in Space Marine 2 videos-

Watch On

Hello, yes, I really like these videos with lots of evil space bugs getting squashed by the giant space zealots. Every time I see one I watch it because Space Marine 2 is creeping up on us and  the giant swarms of monsters to chew through are really, really delightful tech to look at—as evinced by this supercut of swarming monster footage that popped up on the Warhammer Community website this week.

It’s a combination of footage that showed up in previous trailers with a few things I’m pretty sure are new, but this is impressive stuff not just for the technical aspect but because it realizes thirty-some years of Tyranid concept art and puts it in motion. The sprawling two-page spreads of art that used to adorn Warhammer 40,000 books would have these kinds of swarms on them—and the artists made those as dynamic as they could—but the flocking, swarming motion of the bugs in these trailer is the kind of stuff a good adaptation should b…

I had less than zero expectations for the Perfect Dark reboot, but it looks like the 2020s answer to Deus Ex I’ve been waiting for-

Microsoft’s long-simmering Perfect Dark reboot has been in the works for so long, with such a fraught development history, I’d basically written the whole thing off. But in a first look gameplay trailer at today’s Xbox Games Showcase, it looked bafflingly good, a cyberpunk FPS, if not a full-on immersive sim that could fill the Deus Ex-shaped hole in my heart.

The trailer starts with Joana Dark halo jumping into some kind of advanced arcology—later revealed to be Cairo in Egypt—with a force field protecting it from climate change-driven sandstorms raging outside. So far, it’s cool but just a cutscene—however we quickly dive into some exciting gameplay.

Watch On

And hoo boy there’s a lot to love here. It opens with some non-combat exploration that seriously piqued my interest—this could easily be something linear or restrictive, but Perfect Dark looks like the kind of immersive sim-adjacent exploration and social stealth I live for. Even if it isn’…

Call of Duty enlists AI to eavesdrop on voice chat and help ban toxic players starting today-

Call of Duty is joining the growing number of online games combatting toxicity by listening to in-game voice chat, and it’s using AI to assist the process. Activision announced a partnership with AI outfit Modulate to integrate its proprietary voice moderation tool—ToxMod—into Modern Warfare 2, Warzone 2, and the upcoming Modern Warfare 3.

Activision says ToxMod, which begins beta testing in North American servers today, is able to “identify in real-time and enforce against toxic speech—including hate speech, discriminatory language, harassment and more.”

Modulate describes ToxMod as “the only proactive voice chat moderation solution purpose-built for games.” While the official website lists a few games ToxMod is already being used in (mostly small VR games like Rec Room), Call of Duty’s hundreds of thousands of daily players will likely represent the largest deployment of the tool to date.

Call of Duty’s ToxMod AI will not have free rein to issue…

Larian CEO reveals the studio ‘had to do a bit on crunch’ on Baldur’s Gate 3, but it was ‘certainly less’ than previous projects it has worked on-

Larian Studios’ CEO Swen Vincke has revealed the developer had to do “a bit of crunch” to finish its beloved RPG Baldur’s Gate 3, but the amount was “certainly less” than the studio has done on previous projects.

As reported by GamesRadar, Vincke was queried about crunch during a Q&A session following a talk he gave at the Digital Dragons conference in Poland last week. “We didn’t overly crunch,” Vincke said in his response. “But we did have to do a bit of crunch, and I think, to be honest, you will always have a little bit when you’re trying to finish something, especially when there’s so much complexity that needs to be brought together.”

Although some overtime was required to get Baldur’s gate 3 out of the door, Vincke emphasised that the extent of crunch was “certainly less on BG3 than we did in the past”. He pointed to various initiatives the company had taken to minimise the amount of crunch involved in making the game, such as having multiple studios positione…

If you’re playing the Metal Gear Solid 1 Master Collection edition, please for the love of god make sure you don’t pick the PAL version-

Konami has fixed one of the more glaring issues with the Master Collection version of Metal Gear Solid 1. When the game hit Steam three days ago, players were supposed to be able to download different language packs—Japanese, US English and what-have-you—via the game’s launcher. Unfortunately, the relevant Steam pages were inexplicably AWOL, making international versions of the game inaccessible.

That was fatal. At least here in the UK, the only version of MGS 1 I could play was the UK English—or PAL—version. Unlike US NTSC games, PAL versions are built for 50hz screens, meaning the only version of MGS 1 I had access to felt unbearably sluggish in addition to being hard to parse in all its low-res, PS1-era glory. It also meant you couldn’t play MGS: Integral at all, since that version needed you to download the Japanese language pack before it would launch.

That problem, at least, is fixed. Konami has cut the Gordian knot and just added t…

John Romero honoured alongside the teacher who made world’s first edutainment game-

John Romero, famous for his work on Doom, Quake, Wolfenstein and, ah, Daikatana, is finally getting the recognition he deserves. Not for his hair, which remains inexplicably snubbed by awards committees across the globe, but for his entire career up to this point. At the annual Game Developers Choice Awards (GDCA) in March, Romero will take home the Lifetime Achievement Award for his work on “iconic and genre defining first-person shooters” over the years. We are still making plenty of Doom clones, after all.

Romero isn’t the only one being honoured. The judges will also give a posthumous “special award” to Mabel Addis, regarded as the first female game designer, who died in 2004. Addis worked as lead designer on The Sumerian Game in 1964, using her knowledge of ancient history to design something that paved the way “for game elements that wouldn’t become mainstream for decades”.

The Sumerian Game was a piece of edutainment that took the form of “pho…

No Man’s Sky finally has ship customization-

Hello Games may be working on Light No Fire, but they’re not done updating No Man’s Sky either. The latest update is its 27th and it’s called Orbital because it overhauls the game’s space stations. In addition, it contains what Hello Games calls “our most requested feature of all time”, a ship editor for customizing your shiny space vehicle.

“We haven’t introduced customisation previously,” Hello Games explained, “because so many players love exploring to find the perfect ship already out there to purchase.” Ship customization has only been added after the designers came up with a way to integrate it into the exploration loop. Players will have to salvage ship parts as they travel, trading them to get the exact right piece. Those salvaged parts will let you change how your craft looks and works, and even let you create new kinds of starship.

As for space stations, they’re perhaps the only part of No Man’s Sky that hasn’t been revised in a previous update. But as of Orbit…

MSI’s X870 and X870E motherboards come with an auxiliary 8-pin power connector, which could indicate some scary next-gen GPU power consumption levels-

MSI has unveiled its upcoming X870 and X870E motherboard range at Gamescom 2024. Cowcotland visited MSI’s booth and noticed an interesting addition to these boards. It seems all of them featured an 8-pin PCIe power connector located at the bottom of the boards. But why, you might ask?

Cowcotland reports these connectors are included to handle the demands of next generation Nvidia and AMD graphics cards. That indicates some of these cards are likely to consume serious amounts of power. Assuming such cards are a matter of months away from seeing the light of day, MSI is likely already aware of at least the basic requirements of such cards.

Secondary power connectors are not a new feature. They tend to be found on high-end or overclocking-focused motherboards. Their purpose is to provide extra juice to high-power graphics cards, but seeing them included on more mainstream options is interesting indeed.

A standard PCIe x16 slot can provide up to 75W of power. If …

Monster Train dev’s unique turn-based action RPG is coming in May-

The developers of hit deckbuilder Monster Train are gearing up to release their next game: Inkbound, a unique turn-based RPG that’s designed to play fluidly either cooperative or solo by using many of the same tricks as action RPGs and MOBAs. Outside of combat players move freely, while inside it they move around and toss out attacks freely on their turn before the enemies take a shot.

Like Monster Train, Inkbound is a roguelike based around drafting abilities, upgrades, and equipment to make synergized builds for maximum efficiency—all about that exponential growth curve from scrub to unstoppable. The game story takes place inside the Atheneum, a magical library of sorts, where solo or in four player co-op you enter stories to explore them.

Just like Monster Train, developer Shiny Shoe will release Inkbound into Steam Early Access. It’s set to arrive in just a couple of months, on May 22, 2023.

As part of the run-up to releasing Inkbound, Shiny Shoe ha…

Starfield player completes the main story by whacking every enemy to death with his gun, an ability some players didn’t know was in the game at all-

Starfield lets spacefarers battles enemies with both guns and melee weapons, but it also allows players to bash their foes with their gun. And it appears not everyone knows about this, as inadvertently revealed by the YouTuber Causal Loop, who  completed the game’s main story using only the butt of his weapon.

“Guns are designed for a single purpose,” Causal Loop begins “but ammo’s expensive, heavy, and there’s no honour in killing someone who can’t even see your face. So what if you wanted to become a true badass who, instead of pulling the trigger, used their gun as a blunt instrument to spread carnage throughout the Settled Systems?”

The rules for Causal Loop’s playthrough were pretty straightforward, only kill enemies with gun bashing, no companions unless they’re forced by the story (as companions will attack enemies with whatever’s to hand), and play on normal difficulty. Causal Loop’s only exception to these rules was when the game forced him into space comba…

Starfield’s first hotfix is live- ‘Our priority initially is making sure any top blocker bugs or stability issues are addressed’-

Bethesda has released the first hotfix for Starfield that will take on “a few top issues” with the game, including potential quest blockers and stability and performance issues.

“This is a game we’ll be supporting for years and years to come, so please keep all the feedback coming!” Bethesda said. “Even if we don’t get to your requests immediately, we’d love to do it in the future, like city maps. Our priority initially is making sure any top blocker bugs or stability issues are addressed, and adding quality-of-life features that many are asking for.”

To that end, Bethesda has rolled out the first Starfield hotfix, taking the game to version 1.7.29. It doesn’t make a lot of changes but it does take on a trio of problems that can prevent quests from being completed, and also promises better overall performance and stability.

Bigger things are on the way: Bethesda also said today that a “regular interval of updates” will add official DLSS supp…

GeForce GPU giant has been data scraping 80 years’ worth of videos every day for AI training to ‘unlock various downstream applications critical to Nvidia’-

Leaked documents, including spreadsheets, emails, and chat messages, show that Nvidia has been using millions of YouTube videos, Netflix, and other sources to train an AI model to be used in its Omniverse, autonomous vehicles, and digital avatar platforms.

The astonishing, but perhaps not surprising, scope of the data scraping was reported by 404 Media, who investigated the documents. It discovered that an internal project codenamed Cosmos (the same name but different to Nvidia’s Cosmos Deep Learning service) had staff use dozens of virtual PCs on Amazon Web Service (AWS) to download so many videos per day that Nvidia accumulated over 30 million URLs in the space of one month.

Copyright laws and usage rights were repeatedly discussed by the employees, who found some creative ways to prevent any direct violation of them. For example, Nvidia employed the use of Google’s cloud service to download the YouTube-8M dataset, as directly downloading the videos isn’t permitted by …

Payday 3 developer drops Denuvo from the game before it’s even out-

It’s common practice for PC games today to launch with Denuvo, a form of DRM designed to stop the spread of pirated copies of games, and it’s also common practice for developers to remove Denuvo several months after launch as interest (and the risk of piracy) dwindles. Less common is a developer publicly announcing it’s removing Denuvo from a game before it’s even out, but that’s the surprise Starbreeze pulled this Friday.

“Hello heisters, we want to inform you that Denuvo is no longer in Payday 3,” the developer wrote in a post on Steam on Friday. That’s pretty much the whole message—short and to the point, and seemingly a win on the good will front, with the Steam post racking up 524 thumbs up on Steam so far and another 10,000 or so on Twitter.

Payday 3 is less than a week away from its September 21 release, and Starbreeze is clearly looking to roll into the launch with an excited community behind it. Two months ago a thread on the r/paydaytheheist subr…
